Martha helped to define the role of the president's wife and setting many precedents that future first ladies would observe. Martha Washington is consistently ranked by historians in the upper half of all U.S. first ladies, according to Siena quadrennial U.S. first lady surveys. She was often referred to as "Lady Washington", as the term first lady had yet to be coined.
