  • He is the inventor of plastination, a technique to preserve corpses. His work is displayed in an exhibit called Body Worlds, which started touring the world in 1995.
  • In 1968, he became the target of the regime in the GDR after protesting against the suppression of the Prague Spring and tried to flee. He was convicted and imprisoned. Two years later, the Federal Republic bought him free as a political prisoner for 40,000 D-Mark. The former GDR inmate later became one of the best-known German doctors in the world.
