- On 30 January 1998 he suffered injuries in a skiing accident at Steamboat Springs, Colorado and was paralyzed from the neck down. He died nine months later.
- Doak Walker Plaza is located outside the northeast corner of Gerald J. Ford Stadium in Dallas, Texas.
