Biography

Erik Angra is a commercial & television director, cinematographer & documentary filmmaker. The son of Indian immigrants, Angra began his career touring alongside hardcore punk musicians in the US. The footage he released in 2006 featured rare performances from some of the final shows at the hardcore and punk club CBGB's in New York. His editing on the feature-length documentary, The Minister's War, won a special jury prize at the Amsterdam Film Festival in 2012. Angra was also one of the editors on the Emmy Award-winning series The Folklorist and was one of the cinematographers for the Emmy Award-winning series 30 for 30.

The Kickstarter campaign for Angra's documentary Portrait of Harry was supported by Amanda Palmer who tweeted: "I've never cried almost all the way through a Kickstarter pitch". The film documents Harry Somers, a man with only weeks to live, revealing how he escaped from Nazi Germany to eventually become an acclaimed impressionist painter. Somers' work often includes landscapes and other natural settings inhabited by people. Angra began production on the documentary in 2012. As of 2016, it is still in post production.

Angra was also the director of a cult reality series called Quiet Desperation showcasing Boston's creative scene alongside Rob Potylo. It was scheduled to be broadcast on CBS on Sunday afternoons for a six-episode season in spring 2014, but CBS allegedly breached the agreement and refused to view the pilot that had been made for them, despite thousands of dollars being spent by the filmmakers. In April 2014, Potylo and Angra sued CBS for "breach of contract, breach of implied covenant of good faith and fair dealing, and unfair and deceptive acts and practices." The matter was settled out of court.

He is represented by New York talent agency The Right Eye. His clients include Sony, Ken Burns, Coca Cola, Jet Airways, Vice and the Discovery Networks. His work has appeared on almost every major television outlet.

Angra was the editor and additional cinematographer on the Ken Burns holocaust film "Defying the Nazis", starring Tom Hanks. He is the first Indian-American, and the youngest editor to ever receive sole credit on a Ken Burns film. The movie was released on PBS in 2016.

In 2015, Angra began directing a biographical documentary on the wrestler and feminist icon "Chyna" who overdosed & died in April 2016 during production.The film is set to release in fall of 2017

In 2011, Angra joined Florentine Films as Lead Editor and Cinematographer and served there till 2016. In 2014, he joined the media production company Kontent Films as Director and Cinematographer, where he produced PS4 Celebrity Launch Videos and served till 2015. He served as the Director of Photography at ESPN from 2014 to 2016.

Historically, Erik Angra is the first Indian-American, as well as the youngest person to solely be credited as editor on a Ken Burns documentary, "Defying the Nazis".

At the age of eighteen, Angra moved to New York City and became homeless while interning on "Rock the Paint".

I am constantly editing in my head. For me, editing is a very emotionally exhausting process because the work doesn't stop after I clock out.

Take more deep breaths, wake up earlier, and don't live and die by what happens every day. Much like a film, life is not about singular moments but the culmination of all these moments strewn together.
