Biography

Gary Feblowitz (1961-2025) was an international award-winning Director of Photography and cameraman whose career spanned more than 28 years in television and documentary filmmaking. Known for his adventurous spirit and cinematic eye, he filmed on every continent, working with tribes from the Asmat headhunters of New Guinea to the Sudewi in the Amazon, and from underwater shipwrecks to international food expeditions.

He began his career at WCCO Television in Minneapolis, where his work on I-Team and Dimension reports earned him 14 Emmy Awards, the Edward R. Murrow Award, the Columbia DuPont Award, the Peabody Award, and multiple honors from the National Press Photographers Association. In 1995, Feblowitz made history as the first to capture footage of the elusive Sumatran tiger in the wild, an achievement recognized with the Gold Award at the Houston International Film Festival for Discovery Channel's Tiger Hunt: Search for the Elusive Sumatran.

Feblowitz thrived at developing and shooting television pilots that became long-running series, including Bizarre Foods (Travel Channel), Rally Round the House (Discovery HD Theater), Little Zoo That Could (Animal Planet), K-9 to 5 (Animal Planet), and Food 911 (Food Network). His credits also include Ancient Aliens, 48 Hours, 60 Minutes, Dateline, Good Morning America, The Today Show, Late Night with David Letterman, and productions for ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox, PBS, CNBC, Bloomberg, HGTV, History Channel, National Geographic, MTV, Discovery, TLC, and more.

An early adopter of HD technology in 2001, Feblowitz combined technical innovation with a gift for storytelling, earning dozens of industry awards between 2007 and 2011, including multiple Telly Awards, Communicator Awards, Videographer Awards, and AVA Awards. He specialized in wildlife and underwater documentaries, filming sharks, dolphins, coral reefs, slave ships, and sunken treasures, and became known for tackling extreme environments with determination and creativity.

Beyond film and television, Gary and his wife Dominique co-founded Pimento Wood, the first company to legally import Jamaican pimento wood into the United States for jerk cooking. His passion for culture, food, and adventure earned him the nickname "The Jerk Master" and made him a beloved figure on Lake Minnetonka, where he captained his boat, the EFFEN.

Often described as "Indiana Jones with a camera," Gary Feblowitz left behind a body of work that blended fearless exploration with journalistic integrity, inspiring both audiences and a new generation of filmmakers to see the beauty and fragility of the world through the lens of a camera.
