Lydia Koniordou

Lydia Koniordou is a Greek actress, former volleyball champion and public figure whose career bridges classical theatre, education and cultural policy. Raised in Athens, she studied English Philology at the University of Athens from 1971 to 1974 before graduating in 1977 from the Drama School of the National Theatre, a foundation that shaped her enduring relationship with ancient Greek drama. She was a founding member of Theatre of Spring in 1977 and soon collaborated with the National Theatre, performing in works by Eugène Ionesco and Titus Maccius Plautus and appearing as Antigone in Euripides' Phoenissae under Alexis Minotis. From 1978 to 1987 she was a core member of the Karolos Koun Art Theatre, interpreting major roles from both Greek and international repertoire and distinguishing herself in ancient tragedy as Athena in Eumenides, Clytemnestra in Sophocles Electra and Aeschylus Agamemnon, and in numerous chorus performances. Over time she expanded into directing, staging Sophocles' Electra for the National Theatre in 1996 while also performing the title role, and later appearing in The Murderess, Federico García Lorca Yerma and Oresteia. She served as artistic director of the Municipal and Regional Theatre of Volos from 1993 to 1996 and later led the Municipal and Regional Theatre of Patras from 2007 to 2009, where she performed Medea in 2008, and continued to take on demanding classical roles such as the double portrayal of Electra and Clytemnestra in Choephori in 2009. Alongside her stage work she taught acting at private schools, the National Theatre Drama School and the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, and participated in the opening ceremony of the 2004 Athens Olympic Games directed by Dimitris Papaioannou. In 2016 she entered government, serving as Minister of Culture and Sports in the cabinet of Alexis Tsipras until 2018, later standing as a candidate in the 2019 European Parliament elections. She has also served as President of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center. On television she appeared in To fantasma (1990) and from 2021 has portrayed Margarita Typaldou in the series The Land of the Olive Tree (2021). Before her theatrical prominence she built a notable athletic career with ZAON Kifissias, becoming Greek volleyball champion three times from 1974 to 1976 and earning selection to the national team, an early achievement that reflects the discipline and determination that have characterized her multifaceted public life.
