He was formerly an officer of the British Film Institute and before that, the chief film programmer for the Everyman Cinema, Hampstead, one of London's best-known art-houses. He has also written film criticism for magazines ranging from "Time Out" to the "Radio Times" and has written several books, including a biography of Robert Bolt.
