Born in Napier, New Zealand. He was a boxer and became Australian heavyweight champion. Lost his title in 1929 to Ambrose Palmer. Toured England and Europe as a boxer. Returned to Australia in 1932 and retired after more than 300 fights. Began working in films as an extra. Served in the RAAF during World Ear Two as a a small arms and physical training instructor.
