Biography

Andrew Foldi was born on July 20, 1926 in Budapest, Hungary. He was an actor, known for Der Barbier von Sevilla (1968), The Metropolitan Opera Presents (1977) and The Merry Widow (1977). He was married to Marta Justus and Leona Levy. He died on November 21, 2007 in Federal Way, Washington, USA.

A celebrated interpreter of comic roles in Mozart and Rossini operas, especially roles in bass and bass-baritone. Fled Hungary in 1939 for Chicago and briefly worked as a music critic for the Chicago Times.

He made his professional debut in 1954 as Biondello in Giannini's "Taming of the Shrew" at the Lyric Opera of Chicago.

He was the chairman of the Opera Department at the Cleveland Institute of Music from 1979 to 1989.

His best-known role was Schigolch in Alban Berg's "Lulu"; it was one of more than 100 roles he played during his career. He sang at the Lyric Opera of Chicago from 1954 to 1993. He also appeared at many other eminent venues, including La Scala and the Vienna Staatsoper.
