Biography

Joseph Patel is an Academy Award®, BAFTA, Grammy and Independent Spirit Award-winning filmmaker. He produced the feature documentary, "Summer Of Soul (...Or, When The Revolution Could Not Be Televised)," directed by Ahmir 'Questlove' Thompson, which won the Best Documentary Academy Award in 2022. Summer of Soul also won both the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award for US Documentary at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival, and a number of critics and guild awards. Most recently, Patel produced Thompson's next film, "SLY LIVES! aka The Burden of Black Genius," for Onyx Collective/Hulu. The film was nominated for a 2025 Emmy award for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special. A producer, writer and director, Patel began his career as a music/culture journalist and went on to produce and direct television and digital content for MTV News & Docs, Vice Media, The Fader, and Vevo.
