Biography

  • Karel Segers is a Belgian-born producer, writer and story consultant based in Sydney, Australia. He began his career producing prime-time radio and presenting movie shows on television, including a weekly pan-European film programme on MTV. He went on to head Programming and Acquisitions for 22 PPV channels at the Digital Broadcasting Co in London, and negotiated and programmed films for Canal+, Europe's largest pay-TV group. After moving to Australia in 2001, he produced and co-produced short films, documentaries and features, among them Puppy (2005) and The Dinner Party (2009), and was a writer on Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan (2019) through The Story Shop. A Licentiate of Germanic Philology, he has worked since 2006 as a lecturer and story consultant, with clients ranging from first-time writers to Oscar-nominated filmmakers. His blog The Story Department was named among the world's top five screenwriting sites by Amazon Studios, and in 2012 he launched Logline It!, a web resource dedicated to screen concepts and loglines. He created the 'Immersion Screenwriting' method to strengthen the writer's voice at a time when AI is eroding personal style. His seminars and workshops on screenwriting have drawn thousands of participants. He runs workshops at NIDA, lectures in Film and Television at JMC Academy, and guest lectures regularly at Story Academy in Sweden.
