Spoiled

Spoiled is a marimo moss ball kept in a glass jar and featured in the documentary "The Freedom of Uselessness" (2025). Spoiled shares the jar with Bubba, the more well-known moss ball who serves as the film's central subject. While Bubba has become somewhat infamous for embodying a philosophy of purposeful uselessness, Spoiled exists as a quiet companion alongside it. Spoiled is younger and smaller than Bubba. Both moss balls sit at the bottom of their shared jar on a windowsill in Morgantown, West Virginia, growing imperceptibly slowly and requiring only weekly water changes. Spoiled photosynthesizes, rotates gently, and exists without distinction or complaint-the perfect supporting character to Bubba's accidental prominence.
