Biography

Elena Trofimova

Biography

  • Elena Trofimova is a Russian filmmaker based in South Korea. Originally from Moscow, she graduated with a degree in Korean Language and Literature before moving to Seoul to pursue her passion for Korean cinema. She is currently completing her master's degree in Filmmaking (Directing major) at Chung-Ang University, one of Korea's leading film schools.

Her debut short 'Detox' (2022) won Best Women's Film at the Intuition Earth Film Festival and received several international student awards. Her next film, 'Room 1006' (2023), was screened at the White Nights Film Festival in Russia. These early works established her voice as a director interested in exploring inner conflict and social pressure through minimalist yet emotionally charged visual storytelling.

Elena's directing style is defined by an observational approach - she often places the audience in "hidden" or peripheral viewpoints, creating the sense of quietly witnessing human fragility. She experiments with unusual framing and perspective, using confined spaces and subtle camera movement to express tension and vulnerability. Her narratives frequently center on women's experiences and social issues, revealing the quiet desperation that exists in ordinary lives.

She is currently (Oct 2025) developing the short film 'Turned Away' and plans to expand it into a feature-length documentary exploring systemic challenges in Korean emergency care. In the long term, she plans to develop a historical feature connecting the histories of Russia and Korea. At the same time, she will continue exploring contemporary Korean culture through socially conscious, empathy-driven storytelling.
