Stefan L. Smith is a Los Angeles based composer, violist, and session musician
whose work spans concert music, film, television, animation, and live performance.
His music reflects a strong sense of narrative, emotional depth, and a performer’s
understanding of instrumental color, pacing, and expression.
A full scholarship graduate of DePaul University’s School of Music, where he studied composition and viola, Stefan later pursued graduate studies on full scholarship in viola performance at the University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music, where he studied with renowned violist and pedagogue Donald McInnes.
As a performer and recording musician, he has appeared on hundreds of recording credits, including John Williams’ score to Disclosure Day, Simon Franglen’s scores to the most recent Avatar films, John Williams’ score to Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, Hans Zimmer’s score to The Lion King, and Ludwig Göransson’s Academy Award winning score to Sinners, among many others. He is also a tenured member of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, and performs on TV with live performance credits connected to the Grammys, Emmys, Oscars, Modern Family, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, NBC’s The Voice, Wicked: One Wonderful Night, among many other projects.
As a composer, Smith composed the score for DC & Warner Brothers Animation’s Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham and has written music for film, animation, chamber ensembles, and orchestra. His work also includes She Dreams at Sunrise, for which he received a Hollywood Music in Media Award, along with concert works and commissions connected to the Chicago Sinfonietta, the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, the National Orchestral Institute, Savannah Music Festival, Dubhe Ensemble, and a 2025 chamber commission for the Michael Steinberg and Jorja Fleezanis Fund.
His honors include the ASCAP David Rose Award for Film Scoring, and he was one of only eight composers selected for the 2024 to 2026 Universal Composer Initiative, a highly competitive program created by Universal Pictures and its subsidiaries.
