Sylvia Owusu-Ansah

Biography

  • Sylvia Owusu-Ansah, MD, MPH, FAAP, is a distinguished pediatrician, pediatric emergency, and EMS physician. She serves as an associate professor of pediatrics and emergency medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

Beyond her clinical and academic pursuits, Dr. Owusu-Ansah has a notable role as a creative consultant for Season 1 of the Emmy-nominated medical drama 'The Pitt' and contributed to key story lines, such as Season 1, Episode 8 with The Freedom House.

She is the creator, writer (story by), and producer of the HBO short film 'In Good Hands,' which was a finalist in the HBO short film competition. This project was inspired by her upcoming book of the same name and her professional experiences in medicine. Her film has been featured at the American Black Film Festival and will appear at the International Black Film Festival in Fall 2025. She is passionate about supporting writers and production teams.

Her foray into film began when she pitched her movie idea-based on her book-at the University of Pittsburgh Film School's PITCH contest. She collaborated with Executive Producer Carl Curlander, aspiring screenwriter Yasmine Crawley, and director Nicholas Buchheit. The film was subsequently produced and shot in Pittsburgh. Dr. Owusu-Ansah's consulting work was facilitated by Dr. Beth Hoffman of the University of Pittsburgh School of Public Health and Hollywood Health and Society, who connected her with the creative team behind 'The Pitt.'
