- Phil Martie is the founder and CEO of Nicolette, a health technology company that develops tools to empower patients and their families to become active participants in their own medical care. He was inspired to create the company after his personal experience as the parent of premature twins in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
Before founding Nicolette, Phil Martie worked for over 15 years as a business process outsourcing (BPO) executive, holding various leadership roles in operations, sales, and analytics at companies like Canon Business Process Services and Xerox. Personal Experience: In 2014, his twin son and daughter were born extremely prematurely. His daughter, Nicolette, passed away after 27 days, while his son spent a total of 110 days in the NICU. During this high-stress period, Martie and his wife felt overwhelmed by complex medical data and the challenge of advocating for their children's care. This experience highlighted the need for better communication tools in healthcare.
Driven by his family's journey, he founded Nicolette in 2016, naming the company after his late daughter. The company's mission is to rapidly empower patients and their families to become competent members of their own care team.
Nicolette's flagship product is the NicoBoard, a tablet-based application designed specifically for NICU parents. This tool transforms complex medical data from electronic health record (EHR) systems into easy-to-understand visualizations and provides curated, evidence-based educational resources specific to the baby's condition. The NicoBoard helps parents to understand their baby's diagnosis, plan of care, and progress, document their NICU journey with shareable media and journaling, feel more confident in communicating and collaborating with the medical team. Hospitals, such as Children's Health of Orange County (CHOC), have implemented the NicoBoard technology to improve patient outcomes and parent empowerment. NicoBoard took 5-4 years of development, but then in 2023 the final version got published on both Apple & Google Play Store. To this day, NicoBoard is still making more and more updates to improve user experience.
In 2022, his son directed the movie The Jolly Good Christmas and he starred in it.
