Biography

Lucian Msamati was born on March 5, 1976 in Lambeth, London, England, UK. He is an actor and producer, known for Conclave (2024), See How They Run (2022) and The International (2009).

On stage, among others in his distinguished career, he has played jealous and vengeful characters such as Iago and Salieri offering great interpretations of the roles in the productions of William Shakespeare's Othello (2015) and Peter Shaffer's "Amadeus" (National Theatre Live: Amadeus (2017)) respectively.

Raised in Zimbabwe by Tanzanian parents.

Founder member and artistic director of Zimbabwe's acclaimed Over The Edge Theatre Company.

I must also say that part of the space I was granted in terms of playing Iago came from Iqbal Khan. Having a director of [color] cannot be underestimated. It meant that the team had my back. I wasn't the peculiarity in the room.

Within the idea of age- [color-] gender- or any other blind casting, somewhere underneath... is the tacit understanding that "we are allowing you to have that which is ours". So [there is the] notion that you are being allowed into the playground but just so you understand it is still our playground.
