Jonah Howell is a Melbourne based screenwriter and director interested in using horror filmmaking to explore topics of existentialism, morality, and the elusive nature of identity via recognisable genres and modes of storytelling. He is a graduate of the Australian College of the Arts (Bachelor of Screen & Media 2024), where he directed the graduate short film ‘Vermin’, a tale of guilt and identity framed around a classic monster flick. Vermin premiered at the 2025 edition of Monster Fest in Melbourne.
Jonah's follow up short, 'Rear View Mirror', a surreal horror detailing a strange dinner shared between a troubled young man and the mother of a pedestrian he killed while drink driving. Drawing from the works of directors like David Lynch, Jonathan Glazer and Kiyoshi Kurosawa, the film seeks to explore the complex relationship we all have to empathy, the ways in which we turn to it and run from it. Rear View Mirror is aiming for a festival premiere in late 2026 or early 2027.
Jonah also runs Omniscient Films, a production company that seeks to make challenging horror and genre films in Melbourne.
