Biography

Based in the Bay Area, Kamia Gutierrez is an independent filmmaker dedicated to telling stories of hope and resilience of oppressed and marginalized peoples. As transgender woman she brings a unique perspective of Queerness to all her work. She believes cinema possesses the power to profoundly touch people’s hearts, allowing them to empathize with all kinds of people and circumstances. Her mission is to accomplish this with all her work and make the personal universal.

Gutierrez has written, directed, and edited three short films, all using genre to tell Queer stories. My films Girls Own the Void (2026), Transiversary (2024) and Cries of the Sea (2023) have all explored themes of Queerness, resilience, and love. Her films have been shown at several festivals: the 2025 AAPI Film Festival: She, Siya, and the Surreal, the 2024 Transgender Film Festival, and the 2023 Queer Cinema Project. Along with her directing credits she has worked on over 20 short films serving as a producer, 1st assistant director, live sound recordist, and composer.
