Infielder for Los Angeles/California Angels (1961-1971), New York Mets (1972-1973), Texas Rangers (1973-1977), and Pittsburgh Pirates (1977-1978)

Acquired by the Mets from the Angels on December 10, 1971 for pitchers Nolan Ryan and Don Rose, outfielder Leroy Stanton and catcher Francisco Estrada in what is regarded by many as the worst and most disastrous trade in Met history. Sold to the Texas Rangers on July 11, 1973.

Played in first major league game on September 14, 1961.

Played in final major league on May 31, 1978.

Won 11 varsity letters in baseball, football, basketball, and track at Serra High School (San Mateo, CA).

Suffered two strokes while on a cruise ship headed from Grand Cayman to Mexico, with other Major League Baseball alumni. He was transported to a Miami hospital, where he died three days later.

In high school, he excelled in football, basketball, baseball, and track. He was a league champion in the broad jump.

Manager with the Los Angeles/California Angels (1978-81), Chicago White Sox (1986-88), Philadelphia Phillies (1991-96), and Toronto Blue Jays (1999-2000). Among his players were Don Baylor, Nolan Ryan, Bobby Grich, and Joe Rudi. Ironically, he became manager of the Blue Jays 6 years after his Phillies lost to them in the 1993 World Series.
