Matheo Fernandes is a Brazilian filmmaker whose work blends fiction and documentary with rare sensitivity and formal rigor. With a background in Sociology, he creates films rooted in overlooked realities, often shot on celluloid and centered around characters navigating the edge of transformation.
He directed the short film Anthropical (2024), a 16mm fiction about an Indigenous artist resisting cultural erasure, and Banguê (2025), a poetic documentary about artisanal sugarcane spirit production inside a rural settlement in the São Paulo countryside. Both films were publicly funded and selected for national and international festivals.
In 2025, he began development on his debut narrative feature, 'Fermento', continuing his exploration of hybrid forms that challenge dominant representations of Brazil onscreen.
