Niece of Tsar Alexander II

Daughter-in-law of Christian IX. Sister-in-law of King Frederik VIII, Queen Alexandra, Czarina Maria Fyodorovna, Prinsesse Thyra, and Prins Valdemar. Grandmother of Prince Michael of Greece and King Constantine II. Great-grandmother of Prince Nikolaos.

Had 8 children: Constantine (1868-1923, King Constantine I), George (1869-1957), Alexandra (1870-1891), Nicholas (1872-1938), Maria (1876-1940), Olga (b/d 1880), Andrew (1882-1944), and Christopher (1888-1940).

Nineteen Grandchildren: Prince George (1890-1947, King George II of Greece), Prince Alexander (1893-1920, King Alexander I of Greece), Princess Helen (1896-1982), Prince Paul (1901-1964, King Paul I of Greece), Princess Irene (1904-1974) and Princess Katherine (1913-2007, Constantine's 6 children), Prince Peter (1908-1980) and Princess Eugénie (1910-1989, George's 2 children), Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna of Russia and Grand Duke Dmitri Pavlovich of Russia (1890-1958, Alexandra's 2 children), Princess Olga (1903-1997), Princess Elizabeth (1904-1955) and Princess Marina (1906-1968, Nicholas'3 daughters) Princess Nina (1901-1974) and Princess Xenia (1903-1965, Maria's 2 daughters), Princess Margarita (1905-1981), Princess Theodora (1906-1969), Princess Cecilie (1911-1937), Princess Sophie (1914-2001) and Prince Philippos (1921-, Andrew's 5 children), and Prince Michael (1939-, Christopher's son).

Biologically the first cousin of Tsar Alexander III, but through marriage became his sister-in-law. Alexander was married to Princess Dagmar of Denmark and, shortly after their marriage, invited her brother King George I of Greece to Russia to visit, where he met and fell in love with Olga.
