- A keen chess player, he defeated the (then) Indiana high school state champion in the only match they ever played against each other.
- Lived nearly 7 years in France, of which he worked 16 months as a corporate journalist in Paris. Also taught English and French in Strasbourg for two years.
- Was scouted to play NCAA Division I soccer but suffered knee injuries his last two years of high school. While still on crutches, he tried out for a school play and was chosen to interpret the lead.
