Biography

Diogo Freitas do Amaral was born on July 21, 1941 in Povoa de Varzim, Portugal. He was a writer, known for O Magnífico Reitor (2001), No Dia Em Que... (2009) and Dinheiro em Caixa (1994). He was married to Maria José Salgado Sarmento de Matos. He died on October 3, 2019 in Lisbon, Portugal.

Former Member of Parliament and Minister of several portfolios. Aknowledged University Teacher and Publicist. Former President of the General Assembly of the United Nations Organization. Awarded, among other decorations, with the Grand-Crosses of the Portuguese Orders of Christ and of the Infante D. Henrique.

His wife is a writer under the name Maria Roma.

Father: Duarte Pinto de Carvalho de Freitas do Amaral. Mother: Maria Filomena de Campos Trocado.

Has four children: Pedro, Domingos Amaral, Filipa and Joana. Had two older brothers who died in infancy, Duarte and Pedro, and a younger brother, João.
