  • Henryk Marcin Broder was born in Katowice (Silesia/Poland; Polish: Katowice) to a Jewish couple who had survived the Holocaust. The father was a craftsman. In 1958 the family came to Cologne via Vienna. In 1981, Beoswe moved to Israel for ten years. After that he lived mainly in Berlin. Broders older sister moved to Paris. According to Broder, his middle name, abbreviated with M., stands for "Modest" (the modest one), according to other interpretations rather for "megaphone" (ZEIT, 4.9.2008).

    Broder graduated from the Hansagymnasium in Cologne in 1966. He studied law, sociology, economics and statistics in Cologne (without graduating).

    In Germany and Israel, Broder made a name for himself as a critical journalist and opinionated publicist. He saw himself neither as an intellectual nor as a provocateur, but as a "craftsman of words" (Cicero, 12/2009). His career began in the late 1960s in Hamburg at the "St. Pauli-Nachrichten".
