Helen Tompson
- Writer
Helen Tompson is a UK-based screenwriter, director, script editor, and creative consultant working across drama and comedy-drama, with a growing specialism in adaptation. Her work is character-led, socially grounded, and driven by a sharp understanding of story, voice, and perspective.
Helen has developed projects through a range of industry schemes and labs, including the Kay Mellor Screenwriters Lab (Women in Film and TV), The Network at the Edinburgh TV Festival, the Scream Queens Horror Writers Lab supported by BFI NETWORK, and the Rocaberthi Writers Retreat, where she was awarded a scholarship. She is currently developing original and adapted projects for film and television.
Her produced work include commissioned short, Brick by Brick, and funded short, Like Buses; both set to release January and March 2026 respectively. Helen's directorial work includes the play Gaslight (Oct '25), and receives regular copy commissions. Helen is drawn to reimagining existing material in bold but grounded ways, often centring overlooked perspectives and interrogating gender, class, and power.
Alongside her creative work, Helen is an experienced script reader, adjudicator, and consultant. She has adjudicated plays for the Somerset Fellowship of Drama and the Rose Bowl Awards, shortlisted scripts and films for festivals and competitions, and taught screenwriting through the BFI Academy and Falmouth University. She is known for offering clear, rigorous, and practical story feedback rooted in both craft and lived experience.
Helen’s work reflects a commitment to collaboration, authenticity, and the belief that strong storytelling begins with deep attention to character.
