Robert Hawkes has been well-known to Cleveland area theatre-goers since the early 80s, when he received Special Commendation from the Cleveland Critics' Circle (no longer extant) for his work as Mr Zero in "The Adding Machine" and as Lee in "True West".

His own particular favorite roles, however, have been Frank in "Faith Healer" at Chagrin Falls's River St Playhouse, and Robert in "Betrayal" at the Eldred Company. In 2001, he emerged from a nine-year retirement to direct his son as Vladimir in "Waiting for Godot", playing Pozzo himself. Since then, he has been privileged to act in plays by Kushner, Hare, Mamet, Pinter, Beckett, Chekhov, and Shakespeare, and to work for such directors as Thomas Q. Fulton, Seth Gordon, and Ron Newell. He is Associate Artistic Director of the Cleveland Shakespeare Festival, for whom he has played Malvolio in "Twelfth Night" and Prospero in "The Tempest". He has taught for many years at Hawken School. He is is Col. Pickerling in Christmas at Maxwell's.
