- Equaled Jesse Owens's feat of winning four gold medals in a single Olympics. His golds came in the 100 and 400 meter freestyle races, the 4x100 meter freestyle relay and the 4x200 meter freestyle relay. In 1968 he won silver in the 200 meter freestyle and gold in the 4x200 meter freestyle relay.
