Biography

James Boyd-Hoare is an Australian composer, pianist and sound artist working across film, television and multi-media. Based in Los Angeles, his work combines orchestral writing, acoustic instruments, piano, electronics and cinematic sound design, with a focus on emotionally driven music for screen.

His recent credits include composing the score for the LGK's feature film Pater Noster, Jasper Martin’s short film No River Runs Here, and Expresso, which received recognition for Best Original Score at the LA Independent Short Awards and New York Indie Short Awards. His screen work also includes music for brands including Armadillo & Co, Boss Hunting and 9Now.

Alongside his work in film and television, James releases and performs music under the artist name boyd. His sound is defined by the fusion of chamber strings, piano and deep electronic textures, a language developed through projects including his 2024 album Rite of Passage and his sold-out live performance Resonance at the Australian Chamber Orchestra’s Neilson Pier 2/3. Resonance featured an ensemble supported by senior members of the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra and presented James’s music in an immersive live setting combining strings, electronics, piano and lighting design.

Classically trained from a young age and a graduate of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, James is represented by the Australian Music Centre and is a member of APRA AMCOS and the Australian Guild of Screen Composers. He continues to build a body of work for screen and take it to concert stage. James' music is defined by emotional detail and a distinctive hybrid cinematic sound.
