- Brother of Johnny Weissmuller. According to Johnny's son, Johnny (who was born in modern-day Romania) and Pete (who was born in Pennsylvania 8 months after Johnny and their parents immigrated to the United States) switched identities so that Johnny could compete at the U.S. Olympic trials, a plan hatched by their mother. For the rest of his life, Johnny feared that the Amateur Athletic Union, the governing body for competitive swimming at the time, would learn of the deception and strip him of his records and medals.

- While the California Death Index lists his birth year as 1903, Pete was actually born in 1905, 8 months after his parents and older brother Johnny arrived in the United States from what is now modern-day Romania. The mix-up is likely due to the fact the their mother had the brothers switch birth certificates so that Johnny would be eligible to compete in the Olympic trials. The 1905 birth year for Pete is also confirmed by Johnny's son in his book "Tarzan, My Father.".
