Maria Vidal was born in Miami, Florida to Hispanic parents. She founded the New York City-based Rhythm and Blues pop rock band, Desmond Child and Rouge in 1977. They greatly received two albums for Capitol Records as well as performing across the United States as musical guests for Saturday Night Live (1975). This band was best known for the song "Last of an Ancient Breed" for the soundtrack of Paramount's The Warriors (1979). Vidal later sang the theme song to Body Rock (1984) for New World Pictures and "Hands Off" for The Samuel Goldwyn Company's soundtrack of Once Bitten (1985).
