Biography

Gerd Poppe was born on March 25, 1941 in Rostock, Germany. He was married to Ulrike Poppe, ??? and Ilona. He died on March 29, 2025 in Berlin, Berlin, Germany.

Poppe has been committed to the SED regime since 1968, campaigning for democratic reforms and the preservation of human rights.

The theologian Stephan Bickhardt once called him the "spiritual head of the GDR opposition".

Poppe was a co-founder of various independent peace and human rights groups and, after the turn of the century, acted as the first Federal Commissioner for Human Rights and Humanitarian Aid.
