- An American diver, he became the first male athlete to win two Olympic gold medals in the platform event.
- After the Olympics, Lee turned his attention to medicine, serving as a doctor in the Korean War.
- In 1953 Lee retired from competitive diving, but he remained involved in the sport, coaching the 1960 U.S. Olympic team and the 1964 Japanese and Korean squads. He also trained gold medalists Bob Webster and Greg Louganis. In 1968 Lee was elected to the International Swimming Hall of Fame. He was inducted into the United States Olympic Hall of Fame in 1990.

- At age 93, Sammy Lee is still around. He suffers from dementia, and a manhunt was launched last summer (2013), after he went missing. Investigators tracked him through his credit card purchases, as he drove through at least three Southern California counties. He was found by deputies who responded to a report of a traffic hazard.
