Streaming Stars, Then and Now

James Murdoch is the son of media mogul Rupert Murdoch and is often seen as the most rebellious member of his famous family. Unlike his more traditional siblings, James started his career in the music industry by launching a hip-hop record label called Rawkus Records. He eventually joined the family business, where he became known for his sharp mind and for helping the company embrace the digital age and the internet.

Throughout his career, James held high-level roles at major companies like Sky and 21st Century Fox. He was a hard worker who climbed the corporate ladder quickly, becoming one of the youngest CEOs of a major public company. However, as he grew older, he began to disagree with the political direction of his father’s media outlets, particularly regarding how they covered climate change and politics.

Because of these disagreements, James eventually decided to leave the family empire entirely. He resigned from the board of News Corp to focus on his own path, choosing to invest in projects that align with his personal values, such as environmental protection and technology. Today, he runs his own investment firm and remains a wealthy and influential figure independent of his father's shadow.

Harvard Dropout &amp; Hip-Hop: James dropped out of Harvard University in 1995 to start a hip-hop record label, Rawkus Records. He signed artists like Mos Def and an unknown Eminem before eventually selling the label to his father.

The Look: During his rebellious years, he wore an eyebrow stud, dyed his hair blond, and had multiple tattoos-including a lightbulb on his arm.

Record-Breaking CEO: At age 30, he became the youngest-ever boss of a FTSE 100 company when he took over as CEO of Sky in 2003.

Early Gaffe: At age 15, while interning at the Daily Mirror in Sydney, he was photographed asleep on a sofa during a press conference. The rival Sydney Morning Herald splashed the photo across their pages the next day.

Digital Pioneer: He is credited with dragging his father into the digital age, sparking News Corp&#39;s early interest in the internet and &quot;cyberspace&quot;.

Karate Black Belt: Like his corporate style, James is physically disciplined and holds a black belt in karate.

Climate Hawk: Unlike his climate-skeptic father, James is a dedicated environmentalist. In 2006, he invited Al Gore to present An Inconvenient Truth to Fox executives and pushed News Corp to become carbon neutral by 2010.

Political Divorce: He resigned from the News Corp board in 2020, explicitly citing &quot;disagreements over certain editorial content&quot; (particularly regarding climate change denial and Fox News politics).

Democratic Donor: He and his wife, Kathryn, have donated millions to Democratic causes, including the presidential campaigns of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.

Lupa Systems: After leaving the family business with approximately $2 billion from the sale of 21st Century Fox to Disney, he founded his own investment firm, Lupa Systems.
