- Alli Haapasalo is a Finnish director and writer. Her third feature film Girl Picture (2022) won the Audience Award at Sundance Film Festival and was in competition at the Berlin Film Festival and awarded at many others. Girl Picture received four Finnish Film Awards; best film, best director, best screenplay and best editing in 2023. It is Haapasalo’s passion to tell strong female driven stories. Her feature debut Love and Fury (2016) and collectively made Force of Habit (2019), written and directed by seven writer-directors, both brought complex female characters front and center, and gave voice to underrepresented topics and themes, such as gender bias and structural misuse of power. Haapasalo has an MFA from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, as well as a BA from Aalto University’s School of Film, Television and Scenography. She was awarded the Finland Award in 2022 and the Nordisk Film Award in 2020.
