Mini bio

  • Aaron Kirk Douglas attended Springfield, Oregon, public schools, including Thurston High. He graduated in 1983 from the nationally recognized School of Journalism at the University of Oregon.

Aaron began his career in radio and television broadcast news during its formative years, then earned his paralegal degree and worked as a law firm marketing and business development professional. He has worked for some of the most well-known law firms in the Pacific Northwest, including Lane Powell, Barran Liebman, and Miller Nash. The multifamily commercial real estate firm HFO Investment Real Estate has employed him in marketing since 2006, where he is Director of Market Intelligence.

He went back to school in 2003 to pursue a career in filmmaking. His first documentary, "My Days of Awe and Grief: Dirk and Me" was awarded the best documentary prize at the May 2004 Forest Film Festival in Portland.

His first feature film, "Freedom State," premiered in March 2006 at Cinequest and then screened at numerous other festivals. Freedom State, a quirky narrative about the adventures of a lonely housewife and her mental health home colleagues after the apocalypse, was distributed by IndieFlix of Seattle, Washington, and has been available off and on through Amazon Prime.

In 2006, Aaron premiered his first co-produced documentary feature, "The Man You Had in Mind," which featured the music of gay icon Eric Himan. This documentary, about five gay male couples, is distributed by Cinema Epoch and was dubbed into Hebrew, German, and Russian for broadcasting internationally in Israel/West Bank and Gaza, along with Germany and Russia, in 2007. The documentary received a bronze Telly award.

Aaron produced "Monster Camp" with director Cullen Hoback. Monster Camp, a documentary about live-action role-players in the Pacific Northwest, screened at nearly 40 film festivals around the world, winning four awards for best documentary, including the audience award at Cinequest in San Jose. Monster Camp is distributed by Gravitas Ventures. Before its DVD release to Hollywood Video outlets, Netflix, and Amazon Prime, the film enjoyed a limited 8-city theatrical release. Monster Camp has aired in Australia on the ABC television network and for a substantial time remained one of the most popular films for Netflix subscribers in Portland, Oregon.

Aaron also associate produced a film called "Veer" about America's bicycle culture. The film premiered in January 2009 at the Victoria (BC) International Film Festival and screened over 30 times in May 2009 at venues across the country as part of National Bicycling Month, including a May 2009 screening at the Lincoln Center in NYC.

Aaron co-wrote a musical titled "Planet Eden" with Kurt Crowley, who is the original music director and co-conductor for the musical Hamilton on Broadway. The musical had three separate staged readings and received a $6,000 grant from the Regional Arts and Culture Council for the most recent reading. Following its last staged reading in 2011, Mr. Douglas gave the progress a rest but in 2025 began work on it anew. The project is now moving forward with a new book writer, Joel Cobbs of Atlanta. The project has been entered into the NAMT 2026 competition, and a two-week workshop is planned for 2026, directed by its original director, Bruce Hostetler.

Mr. Douglas' memoir. "Growing Up Twice: Shaping a Future by Reliving My Past" was published by Newsworthy Books in 2016. The audio-book version was released in 2017. The book won awards from Readers' Favorite for both the paperback and audio-book versions. It is available on Amazon in electronic and paperback formats, as well as on Amazon Audible, as read by the author.

Mr. Douglas was elected to serve on the board of the Broadway Rose Musical Theatre Company in January 2023. Recently, he started penning essays for Medium, where his handle is @aaronpdx. He is also working on a second memoir under the pseudonym @augustwilderjohnson.
