Richard Velazquez(I)

Richard Velazquez was born in the Bronx and raised on Manhattan's Lower East Side, where he discovered performance early and never looked back. A graduate of The American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City, he built his early career as a song-and-dance performer in musicals and touring productions across the United States and Europe. He eventually traded the stage for a camera and relocated to Los Angeles, where he forged a two-decade career as a television producer, showrunner, and director for Animal Planet, Discovery, History, Spike TV, MTV, and National Geographic. Among his most noted credits is co-creating and producing "Off The Chain," a feature documentary examining the plight of fighting dogs in America, with an original score contributed by members of the Wu-Tang Clan. The film was cited by name during oral arguments before the United States Supreme Court in United States v. Stevens (2010), when Justice Sonia Sotomayor invoked it as a defining example of legitimate documentary journalism in a landmark First Amendment case concerning the limits of laws banning depictions of animal cruelty. His theater foundation informs his approach to nonfiction storytelling, with a consistent focus on character-driven narrative and dynamic structure. Off-screen, Velazquez is a certified mindfulness educator and an award-winning solo performer active in the Los Angeles comedy and solo theater scenes.
