This Is Not A Draft is more than my first feature-length documentary - it's my Phoenix song. In 2014, while I was deployed to Afghanistan, my 5-year-old son was killed. A decade later, in 2024, I set out to confront that pain by honoring the lives of others who, like me, answered the call to serve in the wake of 9/11. This film is a remembrance - not only of the victims of 9-11, but of the generation who voluntarily stepped forward in its aftermath. It is a meditation on service, sacrifice, and the profound cost of war. But at its heart, This Is Not A Draft is about something even more vital: the healing power of intentional community. Through interviews with post-9-11 Veterans, researchers, and grassroots organizations, we trace the arc from motivation to serve, through the emotional toll of war, and into the complex terrain of life after the uniform. We don't shy away from Veteran suicide - we confront it with honesty, and with hope. This film is for those who served, for the families who stood beside them, and for anyone seeking to understand what comes after war. It is a story of loss, yes - but also of resilience, of reconnection, and of finding purpose again.
