- U.S. representative from New York (3 January 1969 - 3 January 1983); in 1969 she became the first black woman elected to Congress.
- Pictured on a USA nondenominated 'forever' commemorative postage stamp in the Black Heritage series, issued 31 January 2014. Price on the day of issue was 49¢.
- Along with Bella Abzug and Patsy Mink, became among the first women to seek the Democratic nomination for President of the United States in 1972. She went on to receive 152 delegates and win the New Jersey primary coming into the convention.
