Biography

Former Scotland soccer captain who won 51 caps for his country. In 2001 he was included in the Scottish "Hall of Fame" and was a huge favourite amongst his fellow Scots for his wholehearted and committed displays on the field of play.

Had a long and distinguished playing career in which he made over 500 appearances serving the likes of Dundee, Blackburn Rovers (twice), Manchester City, Glasgow Rangers, Coventry City, Bolton Wanderers, Preston North End and Blackpool. Was a winner of the Associate Members cup with Blackburn Rovers in 1987 scoring the only goal for the Lancashire club in a 1-0 win over Charlton Athletic at Wembley Stadium. He later won the FA Carling Premiership title in 1995 during his second spell with Rovers and completed the 1999 double with Glasgow Rangers as they secured both the Scottish Premier League and Scottish Cup. In 2001 he led Bolton Wanderers to the Premiership after a play-off final win over Preston North End, a club he later joined on a loan basis.

In 2002-2003 whilst in his final season as a professional footballer his life was in turmoil as his wife Denise suffered complications following cosmetic surgery and was in a coma for a number of weeks. Thankfully she survived her ordeal but her illness was certainly a shock.

Always remembered as being the defender who slipped to allow Paul Gascoigne to score his wonder goal in the 1996 European Championships when England faced Scotland at Wembley.

He has quite a fan club in his home town of Keith, and parties are organized to watch him in major matches.
