Joycelyn Sophia Jackson was born in 2004 in Fremont, California. They attended James Logan High School in Union City, California and graduated in 2022 from the Electronic Media Production Academy where they studied broadcast journalism and fell in love with being behind the scenes. Joycelyn is a writer, director, and producer and a recent graduate from Howard University where they studied television, film, and playwriting.
Through their K-12 education, Joycelyn participated in multiple choirs and bands. Although they have a history in performing arts, they weren't involved in a traditional theater arts program until they got to Howard. Joycelyn also played clarinet and bass clarinet for a total of 9 years and was a part of the James Logan High School Marching Band. Their history in music led them to learning composition and producing their own songs and creating a podcast called Indie House.
As a freshman at Howard University, Joycelyn joined the Howard University Film Organization (HUFO). They worked on the first volume of 3-episode miniseries called ‘Where’s Everybody At’ as a PA, boom operator, and audio recorder. The second volume, a 2-episode miniseries under the same name, was produced during their sophomore year and Joycelyn was the assistant director of the second episode and one of the youngest people on set
During Joycelyn's junior year at Howard, they focused on writing. They wrote a 30-minute one act play 'Crash and Burn', a 10-minute play 'Incline', and two 10-minute short films 'Smitten' and 'Friend' in preparation for their senior thesis film. They also produced, assistant directed, and assistant camera operated a Howard University senior thesis film 'Stone Thrower' which was selected for the 2025 Howard Thesis Showcase.
In their senior year at Howard 'Incline', was one of four 10-minute plays selected and produced in Young Griots: New Works for the Stage at Howard University. Joycelyn participated in the 48-hour film project in DC as an assistant director while assistant directing another Howard University senior thesis film 'How it Really Happened', which was selected for the 2026 Howard Thesis Showcase. They wrote, directed, produced, edited, and composed for their short film 'Sangria' with a budget of about $300 in the fall of 2025. Then they pitched and directed their Howard University senior thesis film 'Friend' in the spring of 2026.
