Sofia Sotiria Mavrou is a Greek filmmaker, writer, producer, and actress based in North Wales. Drawn to psychological drama and local heritage, she creates films that explore inner emotional landscapes while preserving and celebrating community history. Her work is also driven by a passion to revive the spirit of classic cinema and introduce its artistry to younger generations, ensuring timeless storytelling continues to inspire new audiences.
She wrote, directed, and produced the short film An Impossible Secret (2024), which screened at multiple international festivals and received several awards, including official selection at the Wales International Film Festival and a Special Mention at the Greece International Film Festival.
Through her company JM Film Productions, Sofia produced The Fatal Dilemma, a 1940s set film noir inspired in part by true events that took place in Colwyn Bay in 1940. She wrote the screenplay, appears in the film, and completed principal photography in 2025. The project is currently in post production.
She also produced Other Side of the Lens through JM Film Productions, a story developed by Sofia and writer Carl Staples, with the screenplay written by Staples. Sofia completed principal photography in August 2026, and the film is now in post production. The script was selected as a Semi Finalist in the 2025 competition cycles of both the Chicago Script Awards and the London International Screenwriting Competition.
Sofia is currently developing a short film about Miss Ethel Hovey, created as part of a wider initiative to make Welsh local history accessible to young people. Supported by Colwyn Bay Town Council and the Colwyn Bay Heritage Group, the completed film will be shown in secondary schools, supporting both History and Welsh lessons. This project reflects her commitment to youth engagement, heritage interpretation, and community focused storytelling.
Her creative practice consistently blends psychological depth with historical resonance, bringing local stories to life through film while championing the revival of classic cinematic language for future generations.
