Biography

Danny Breen was born, raised and educated in St. John's.

Along with his six brothers and sisters, Danny grew up in the downtown area. His father, Peter, worked for the Longshoremen's Protective Union and his mother, Katherine, worked equally hard raising her family. They taught their children the value of hard work and having respect for others, values Danny still holds today.

After spending more than 20 years in the financial services industry, Danny turned his attention to serving the residents of St. John's as a city councillor.

First elected in 2009 to represent Ward 1, he was acclaimed for a second term in 2013. He was elected Mayor in 2017 and again in 2021, when he won by acclamation.

Along with his duties as Mayor, Danny is a member of the Big City Mayors Caucus, provincial representative on the board of directors of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, director and executive member of Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador and vice chair of the Eastern Regional Services Board

Danny also serves on the national board of Energy for a Secure Future and is a director on the World Energy Cities Partnership.

Deeply committed to his community, Danny has served on the board of directors of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador and is past chair of both the MacDonald Drive Junior High and Vanier Elementary School Councils. He has been president of Avalon Minor Hockey Association, a board member of the Murphy Centre and is currently a member of the Rotary Club of St. John's and the Royal St. John's Regatta Committee.

In recognition of his community service and leadership, Danny received the King Charles III Coronation Medal in 2025.

Danny was educated at St. Bon's, Brother Rice and Memorial University, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and History.

Danny and his wife Ann have two daughters, Erika and Katie, and are proud grandparents to Kyla and Neil.
