Biography

Mohammad Reza Shajarian was born on September 23, 1940 in Mashhad, Iran. He was a composer, known for Kingdom of Heaven (2005), Rhino Season (2012) and The First Letter (2003). He was married to Katayoun Khansari and Farkhondeh Golafshan. He died on October 8, 2020 in Tehran, Iran.

Mohammad-Reza Shajarian is an internationally and critically acclaimed Persian traditional singer, composer and ostad (master) of Persian music. He has been called "Iran's greatest living master of traditional Persian music. He is recognized as skilled singer in the challenging traditional Dastgah style. In 1999 UNESCO in France presented him with the Picasso Award and in 2006 with the UNESCO Mozart Medal.

Father of Homayoun Shajarian and Mozhgan Shajarian.

Has six grandchildren.

Was banned from appearing on tv or in the state media because of his support to the 2009 Green Revolution that challenged the fraudulent re-election of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
