Biography

Sammy A. Publes is a Cuban-born actor, director, producer, and playwright. Born and raised in Havana, Cuba, his family immigrated to the United States as political refugees while he was young.

After graduating high school, Publes pursued his passion for the arts, earning an Associate’s degree in Theater from Grand Rapids Community College and later a Bachelor of Arts from Western Michigan University.

On screen, Publes is known for his role as CHÉ in the Starz crime drama Power Book IV: Force and as Coach Angelo in the AMC series 61st Street. His television credits also include appearances in The Chi, Empire, Chicago P.D., and Soundtrack.

His film work includes roles in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Stone, Teacher, and All Things Fall Apart.

A veteran of the Chicago theater community, Publes has performed with renowned companies including Steppenwolf Theatre Company, Teatro Vista, AppleTree Theatre, The Second City, and Lookingglass Theatre Company. He is the founder of Mixed Roots Collective and the playwright of the stage production Chicago Lore(s)- Young Lords of Chicago.
