- Ricky Hatton was raised in Hyde, Greater Manchester. After competing as an amateur boxer he had a record of 73-7 before turning pro. He won a regional and a lightly regarded world title before stepping up in opposition. He won the IBF/The Ring junior welterweight title from Kostya Tszyu in a minor upset. In his next match he added the WBA title by stopping Carlos Maussa. Moving up to welterweight he outpointed Luis Collazo for his WBA title. Then returning to junior welterweight to regain the IBF belt. After this his career went down hill losing half of his remaining six matches, though two of them were to all-time greats Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather. He passed away in 2025. at the age of 46.
Following his untimely passing he became the youngest (recently born) British, welterweight, and junior welterweight world champion to die. Succeeding Alan Minter, Vernon Forrest, and Arturo Gatti, respectively.

- He was awarded the M.B.E. (Member of the Order of the British Empire) in the 2007 Queen's New Years Honors List for his services to Boxing.
- Is good friends with Manchester United and England striker Wayne Rooney. Rooney carried one of Hatton's titles out to the ring during Hatton's bout with Jose Luis Castillo, this received a negative reaction from many City fans as it was seen to be "mixing with the enemy".
- Is a die hard Manchester City F.C fan and often goes to games when not training for upcoming fights. His grandfather and father both played for City but Ricky decided to follow boxing rather than follow in his father's and grandfather's footsteps.
