Biography

Jonny Lewis

Overview

  • Birth name
    Jon Richard Lewis
  • Height
    5′ 8″ (1.73 m)

Biography

  • Jonny Lewis started acting at age 45 after being invited to a theatre audition "just to watch." After lead roles in 3 Off-Off-Broadway shows in 2002, and winning a Best Actor award for the first short film he ever acted in, he moved to Los Angeles, where he did 150 student and indie films in 8 years. While taking care of his elderly mother in Michigan from 2014 to late 2019, Jonny occasionally flew back to LA to shoot short films that earned him 20 awards on IMDb (plus another 7 awards from non-IMDb festivals) and 150 festival appearances. After a year as a nomad in Asia, Jonny ended up in Siberia for a year, and moved to Moscow in May 2025. In 2025 Jonny finished 3 feature scripts, including "Sgt. Meat," the absurd but true "as told to" story of a U.S. Army medic in the Iraq War, and "The Grief Ranch," about six people at a remote ranch who must help each other through their grief when the planned-on grief counselor goes into early labor and cannot attend. Jonny finished a smaller budget script in January 2026. Then he wrote a sci-fi script about two VR gamers who are transported into game realities. One is in mortal danger, and the other--a teenage girl with vitiligo--does not want to come back. He then wrote a thriller about a 14-year-old-girl who regenerates her leg after it is amputated in an accident, and is now working on a medical thriller about Big Medicine. He lives in Moscow with his girlfriend Mila. They plan to move to the U.S. in late 2027.

Trivia

  • Won "Best Actor in a Short Film" for the first film he ever did. It was Cleve Lamison's "The Story", shot in 2002, and the award was presented in 2004.
  • Before becoming an actor, Lewis was a publisher of environmental science books. He was once offered the job of Head of European Operations for CRC Press, but turned it down, because it did not fit with his family situation.
  • Jonny's hobby is languages. He has studied several, both formally and informally--including Swahili, in preparation for a trip to Tanzania, where he taught English in a magnet school in the highlands. He wrote and directed a couple of short films in Spanish while living in Tijuana. Jonny has family in Japan, and plans to shoot a short and a feature (both comedies) in Japan in 2021. As part of his long-range career goals, he hopes one day to shoot feature films in France and China.
