Mini bio

  • Clive Mason is a Deaf British television presenter. He is probably best known for his work on "See Hear" a program for Deaf and hard of hearing people.

Mason was born in Scotland. He was born deaf, and went to a deaf school when he was five years old. During the first five years of his life he was not taught sign language, and due to communication difficulties he became isolated.

In the 1970s Mason worked closely with Paddy Ladd, a deaf man who at the time was involved in researching British Sign Language (BSL). Mason became involved in the research which was being carried out by Paddy Ladd. The BBC spotted Mason on a video he had made as part of the research. Upon seeing Mason's video, the BBC offered him a job on "See Hear", and Mason began work presenting on the program in 1984. During the program history Mason was highly involved in the production of various Christmas and pantomime specials.

Mason has been the main presenter of See Hear since he joined the team in 1984, and is the longest serving presenter to date.

In 2005, due to his involvement in highlighting issues within the Deaf community, he was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Remark! Film & TV Awards. Judges referred to him as a "Deaf icon".
