Biography

Bengt Berger was born on August 31, 1942 in Stockholm, Sweden. He was a composer, known for Bara du & jag (1994), Granskogen i våra hjärtan - En bondfilm (1994) and Aleph, lectures contades (1999). He was married to Ann Petrén and Prudence Woodford-Berger. He died on May 15, 2026 in Sweden.

In 2022, he was awarded the Royal Swedish Academy of Music's highest award, the Medal for the Promotion of Musical Art, for his "significant work as a percussionist and musical bridge builder".

Percussionist and known as one of the most distinctive figures in Swedish jazz. He drew a lot of inspiration from Ghana and India for his music and was active in many different groups over the years.

In 2011, he received both Sveriges Radio P2's honorary award Guldkatten and the Jan Johansson scholarship.

Bengt Berger was a Swedish jazz drummer, composer and producer.

Berger studied north and south Indian music since the 1960s with Pandit Taranath Rama Rao and Mridangam Vidwan P.S. Devarajan and played the tabla and mridangam.
