- Compiled a 127-40-8 record at USC, winning national championships in 1962, 1967, 1972 and 1974. Had a 44-88-1 record at Tampa Bay including three playoff appearances after losing the first 26 games in franchise history.
- Is still the winningest coach in USC history and was the winningest coach in Tampa Bay history at the time of his retirement.
- Popularized the I-formation while at USC.
- Served as an assistant coach at Oregon (1950-1958) and Southern California (1959). Head football coach at USC from 1960 to 1975. Head football coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 1976 to 1984.
- Admitted that as an Irish Catholic, he was a Notre Dame fan growing up.
- Inducted into the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame in 1998.
- Inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1988.
